How to Avoid Scams

Most independent professionals take pride in their work and operate with integrity. But as with any industry, there are occasional bad actors. It’s important to be aware of red flags that could point to a potential scam.

Here’s how to protect yourself and avoid being taken advantage of:

Research Before You Hire

Always start by doing a bit of homework:

  • Look up reviews or testimonials from other clients.
  • Search their name or business online to check for complaints or warnings.
  • Ask for references and actually contact them if you’re unsure.

If they’re not willing to provide any proof of past work or a web presence, that’s a red flag.

Be Wary of Large Upfront Payments

Scammers often ask for full payment before starting the job and then disappear.
Never pay the full amount in advance. A deposit of 10% to 30% is common for legitimate jobs, especially when materials are required. The rest should be paid as the work progresses or upon satisfactory completion.

Get Everything in Writing

Avoid handshake agreements. Always have a basic written agreement that includes:

  • A clear description of the work to be done
  • Estimated timeline
  • Total cost and payment schedule
  • Any guarantees or follow-up support

Even a simple email confirmation counts as a basic agreement. It gives you a record to refer back to if anything goes wrong.

Ask for ID or Business Info

Especially for in-home work, it’s smart to ask for:

  • A valid ID or business card
  • Proof of any relevant licenses
  • A written estimate or invoice with their name and contact details.

Legitimate freelancers won’t hesitate to share this. It shows professionalism and accountability.

Avoid Vague or Pushy Communication

Scammers often:

  • Rush you into hiring
  • Avoid specifics about their pricing or experience
  • Won’t provide answers in writing
  • Use only one method of contact (like a personal phone number or email)

Trust your gut. If the communication feels off, don’t move forward.

Be Cautious with Cash Only Deals

Some legitimate professionals do work in cash, but it’s best to request a receipt.
Avoid “cash only, no paperwork” deals, especially if they’re combined with any of the red flags above.

Use a Trusted Platform

Hire through directories or platforms that:

  • Require provider profiles
  • Offer customer reviews
  • Provide contact and support options

This adds a layer of accountability and makes it easier to report or follow up if needed.

Trust, But Verify

Most self employeed workers work hard to build their reputations and earn your trust. A little due diligence upfront can save you time, money, and stress while also ensuring you’re supporting a professional who deserves your business.
